Find out whether you would actually work with your lawyer, or just with the firm's paralegals and support staff. Above all, ask yourself: "Am I comfortable with this person?" "Would I feel comfortable sharing important and sometimes very private details with this person?"
- Do some homework. You can get a sense of what the firm's or attorney's reputation is in the legal community by talking to other attorneys you know, or by having friends talk to attorneys they know. You can sometimes find articles, publications, brief mentions and a lot of other information about a firm on the Internet as well.
- Find out whether they actually take cases to trial or if they have a "settlement policy." Why is this important? It's important because if the defendant's insurance company knows that the chances of your lawyer being willing to take a case all the way to verdict are very slim — the insurer is not likely to offer a reasonable settlement.
